What To Do When Spills Happen

Mark at Sure Clean here. I’ve been in the carpet cleaning industry for over 39 years, and I’ve seen my fair share of stains. What some people may not know is that what you do in the first few minutes can have a great effect on how difficult stains can be to remove.

Whether it is a spill on upholstery, rugs, or carpet, there are some simple ways to prevent spills from becoming permanent stains. Just follow these three simple steps.

1. Blot the stain gently.

One of the biggest mistakes I see is throwing a towel on a stain and standing on it. This will just drive the liquid further down into the carpet, padding, and flooring. Get a dry towel, fold it, let it lay there gently and tap on it. You can even leave it there for a bit. Moisture will always seek dryness.

2. Keep club soda or vinegar in your pantry.

Most stains can be mitigated by either blotting with club soda or a mix of one tablespoon of hand dish soap, a tablespoon of white vinegar and two cups of warm water. Apply a small amount to the stain and use a white cloth to blot it until the stain is gone.
